Experience

I have a great deal of prior teaching experience that I believe would make me the perfect tutor for you. My earliest teaching experience began when I was in high school. I worked at a Montessori school each day as an After School Teacher and was inspired by the student-directed and highly creative learning approach the school took. At the same time, I tutored a first grade boy who was struggling to learn to read. It was an incredible feeling to see him finally sound out words and read on his own for the first time. During university I focused on my administrative and organizational skills while working for the Canada Pension office and the University of Toronto Art Centre. These two jobs taught me how important it is to be able to synthesize information (in this case about art and government benefits) and then share it with other people in order to help them. Afterwards, spent two years teaching in Korea at private language academies. This was where I developed my passion for teaching English and realized how much I want to share my love of language learning with other people. I especially loved teaching a group of civil servants. I still think fondly of one middle aged architect in particular who was so highly motivated that he went from being a beginner to an apt intermediate student in just a couple of months. It was in Korea that I also fell in love with yoga and so when my teaching contract was finished I went to India to complete my yoga instructor certification. When I moved to Chicago after living in Korea I was determined to continue teaching both English and yoga and so I started teaching English online and yoga in wellness centers. Teaching online was a really incredible opportunity since I was able to communicate with students in Italy, France, and Spain who would otherwise have been too busy with their corporate lifestyles to take classes. The flexible hours meant that I could teach them whenever they most needed a lesson and were available to learn. For the last six months I have been teaching at a private girls' high school in Istanbul, Turkey. I've been really fortunate to be able to use my creativity and love of researching in this position. I've designed my own syllabus, exams, and teaching materials to reflect the core curriculum. I'm very excited to move back to Canada and begin working with students who love learning English and French. I’m sure you would agree that there is nothing more satisfying than being able to utilize the skills learned inside the classroom out in the real world, in their everyday lives. For this reason, I strive to teach modern, practical English and French that will ensure students excel in an English or French-speaking environment. This requires me to get to know each of my students well in order to meet their language learning needs. In my courses, I develop creative and exciting lesson plans tailored to individual strengths and weaknesses.
